Description |
oak; hinged; lid; handles; lock; key; iron; band REMARKS:Handmade oak tool chest with hinged lid, iron handles, two partitioned inner shelves and a lock and key, has iron banding around lid. Left handle plate is missing, handle still extant. Top of chest appears to have been modified. Chest thoroughly cleaned 4/87 with turpentine and linseed oil mixture, and repolished with dark old English oil. Tool chest belonged to donor's grandfather, Joel Lynn Kirtley, who married Martha Bedwell and had 11 children. He was born in Hamburg, Germany; emmigrated to the U.S. and homesteaded in Drain, Oregon area in 1869. He worked as a railroad bridge carpenter in Drain area. The tool chest was passed down and utilized by two more generations of Kirtleys. The tools contained therein have been used by three generations. Joel Lynn Kirtley and the donor's father both made shoes at home, thus part of this tool kit is comprised of cobbler's tools. It was my decision to treat this chest and the tools as a whole collection. Thus the tools are stored in the chest, approximately as they were found. Irene Zenev 4/87 |
