Oral histories; transcription REMARKS:Vera Bacon was born in Riddle, OR, in 1892. Her parents were John James and Minnie Briggs. Her father worked on the railroad and then later had a grocery store in Riddle; and when he sold that, he became a carpenter. Vera Bacon was raised in Riddle. She went to school there, and later became a teacher. She taught at Rice Hill, Yoncalla and Millwood schools. Her grandparents, the Briggs (William and Elizabeth) owned the Overland Hotel in Canyonville. Vera spent many summers there and often worked. She married John Bacon and moved to Garden Valley, where they farmed and had prune orchards. Mrs. Bacon told her experience in the fall of picking prunes and drying them, having all the workers to cook for. She also talked about women getting the vote.... [from the Introduction]. |
