REMARKS:The Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History was founded in 1968 by the Douglas County (Oregon) Board of Commissioners. Its purpose is to "collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit materials related to the history and natural history of Douglas County." Originally control of the Museum rested in the Douglas County Fair Board; the Museum later became a separate department of Douglas County.; There are several associated organizations. The Board of Commissioners appoints an Advisory Committee to assist them in overseeing the operations of the Museum. Advisory Committee records for 1987 are missing, but otherwise, files are complete from 1981 [when the Museum was separated from the Fair Board] through 1996. The Douglas County Museum Foundation develops and manages endowment funds for the Museum. The Friends of the Douglas County Museum sponsor public programs, manage the Museum's Gift Shop, raise funds, and provide volunteers for the Museum.; MG1 includes all administrative papers of the Museum and its Advisory Committee that are retained for archival purposes, including warranties for computer hardware and software. MG1.1 is the subgroup for plans and drawings of Museum facilities. MG1.2 is the subgroup for ephemera [exhibit announcements, brochures, etc.] related to the Museum. MG1.3 is the subgroup for papers of the Friends of the Douglas County Museum.; MG1.10 is for papers of the Douglas County Museum Foundation.; Other subgroups contain papers of special projects and studies performed by the Museum.; One box of printed documentary artifacts [press releases and other materials] is stored as LBOX.17 on the Research Library's balcony shelves.; This entire group needs to be reviewed and reorganized [Fred R - 14 May 1993].
