REMARKS:wwRecords of the Roseburg Chapter, American Association of University Women. The collection consists of eight scrapbooks, 1953-1985; and three books of minutes, 1953-1973.; According to the organization's own history, in December 1952 "Mrs. Walter S. Fisher of Roseburg attended a party in Portland. During the evening, her niece, Mrs. Lamar Tooze, Jr., approached her on the subject of organizing a chapter of AAUW in Roseburg, Mrs. Tooze being an ardent member of the Portland Branch. Mrs. Fisher was lukewarm in the matter, explaining that an earlier chapter of AAUW in Roseburg had folded because of a combination of circumstances, mamely, war activities of members and a small membership. Mrs. Fisher further explained to Mrs. Tooze that the city of Roseburg was greatly over-organized and the success of a further club was problematical. Mrs. Tooze was persistent. Dr. Ethel Reuter, State Membership chairman for AAUW, called Mrs. Fisher over long distance, adding her urgings,[sic] to those of Mrs. Tooze. It was pointed out that only ten members were necessary to effect a local organization, so at long last Mrs. Fisher succumbed to the pressure."; Mrs. Fisher [Ethel Tooze Fisher] conducted a membership campaign to contact "every single eligible woman in Douglas County.....Women were calling from all over the city and county desiring membership. One of the most unhappy phases of this period was advising certain applicants that they were ineligible for membership, either because of their degree or the college attended. Our list of associate members was limited, so that eliminated many who were eager to affiliate."; A preliminary organizational committee met early in 1953 to prepare a slate of officers. That slate was presented to the membership at the organizational meeting "...at the Library Arts Building of the Senior High School on Saturday, March 28, 1953. Officers nominated were:; President -------------------------- Mrs. James Slattery; Vice President --------------------- Mrs. Cloyd Riffe; Treasurer -------------------------- Mrs. Charles Woodrich; Corresponding Secretary ------------ Mrs. Walter Edmonds; Secretary -------------------------- Mrs. Harold Hoyt"; [from a binder containing typed summaries of annual AAUW activities, formerly cataloged as D-262.2]
