REMARKS: This interview is with Dr. Lydia Emery and takes place at her hoe in Yoncalla, Oregon on February 15, 1979 and the interviewer is Valerie Sonnenberg.
Lydia Hershberger Emery was born in Kalona, Iowa in 1909. Her family were Mennonites and her parents were Pennsylvania Dutch. She had six breothers and she feels that she got equal support and motivation even though she was the only daughter and she was raised on a farm after graduating rfrom high school.
She taught school for four years so she could go to medical school. She attended the University of Iowa Medical School where there were 10 women and 300 men in a four-year program. She graduated in 1941 and interned at Allentown, Pennsylvania, then she entered the Naavy and she met and marred Jeep Emery and moved to Yoncalla in 1946. In 1949 she started a family practice specializing in pediatrics and practicing to this day. He fees are opne dollara for office visits and two dollars for house calls.
