REMARKS:Papers of Harley Johnson and other members of the Johnson family, relating to motor stage operations between Roseburg and Marshfield. Harley Johnson was a stage driver who operated vehicles on the Roseburg-Marshfield route. This collection of papers includes business letters, receipts, and trade cards advertising the line's route and timetable. Other papers include contracts authorizing Harley Johnson to carry U.S. mail, and a petition from citizens of the Douglas-Coos County boundary area requesting that delinquent taxes for the Coos Bay Military Wagon Road Company be applied to improving road conditions from the Reston/Remote area into Marshfield [Coos Bay].; Harley Johnson served in the US Army's 77th Division in World War I. One notebook in the collection contains a listing of fellow soldiers in Johnson's unit. A separate section of this manuscript collection consists of military and civilian newspapers ca. 1918-1919 that he received while in the Army.; The collection includes souvenir scrapbooks and publications from world fairs in San Francisco, CA, and Seattle, WA.; A notebook kept by Arthur Johnson and Agnes Johnson, postmasters of Remote, OR, ca. 1903-1920, is also included in this collection. The notebook includes sample postmarks from Reston, OR., ca. 1934.
