REMARKS:The Sanborn Fire Insurance Company prepared maps of urban areas, showing outlines of structures with codes indicating fire-related information [type of building material, number of windows, subject of business, etc.]. Data from Sanborn maps were used by fire insurance agents to compute fire insurance premiums for home or business owners. Sanborn maps are important sources to determine the shape and composition of buildings, since no other relevant data were compiled so systematically.; This collection consists of photocopies of maps of the Roseburg business district and surrounding residential areas for various dates between 1884 and 1903. A series of Sanborn maps is also available on microfilm.; Photocopies of the 1903 Sanborn maps of Roseburg are shelved with the 1920 [original] map in the map desk of the Research Library [with the Metsker Douglas County atlases].
