REMARKS:One  roll of microfilm, Microcopy No. M 177, containing correspondence by Treasury Department Special Agen J. Ross Browne, 1854-1857.; From the Introduction: "[this is one of 3 rolls of microcopy reproducing] 3 bound volumes of letters and reports addressed to the Secretary of th eTreasury by special agents of the Treasury Department for the period 1854-61." J. Ross Browne was assigned to Texas and the Pacific Coast, 1854-57, and to the Pacific Coast exclusively, 1857-60. "...the 'secret inspectors of customs,' as the special agents were generally known, were concerned primarily witht he detection of fraud by importers or others and of irregularities in the accounts of collectors of customs....These volumes contain reports of and recommendations concerning investigations made by special agents and letters relating to itineraries and expenses of the agents. Some of the reports are accompanied by enclosures such as lists, tabulations, various customs documents, [etc.]...."
