REMARKS: On September 3, 1986 Doris and Gerald Bacon interviewed Fred Applegate of Yoncalla who lives in Scotts Valley on the Milltown-Elkhead-Shoestring area. Frederick Grant Applegate is the son of Grant applegate and Myrtle Stowe, the grandson of Albert Applegate and Nancy Johnson and the great grandson of Charles Applegate and Melinda Miller who were donaton land claim settlers in old Umpqua County. Fred grew up in Scotts Valley on part of the Levi Scott donation land claim which his grandfather Charles Applegate purchased about 1865 for his two sons albert and John. Albert took the southern portion of the claim and ohn the northern. Frederick Grant Applegate married Jane Shepherd who had lived up Elk Creek not far from the Applegate farm. They both attended high school in Yoncalla where he was a senior and she was a pretty freshman.
They were married March 15, 1941. Fred was a logger and his career took him to the forests of the Umpqua and Coast Range. He became one of the most skilled fallers in the indstry but his heart and dreams always centered around his family and its Scotts Valley home. Fred and Jane had three children: Susan Jane, Marie Christine and John Frederick. Susan livs in the Eugene area. Marie lives on the home place and is married to a Helmer. John Frederick lost his life in an automobile accident, ata the age of 17 in 1970.
