REMARKS: This is an interview with Catherine Matthews on September 20, 1978 at the home of Mrs. Matthews on Garden Valley, outside of Roseburg. The interviewer is Star Eatherington.
In this interview Mrs. Matthews talks about her life in early Roseburg or rather Oakland and the Umpqua area. She came here in 1920 to teach school and she talks about her experiences being an eighteen year old girl and getting off a train and the first tie away frome home alone and the hotel she stayed at in Oakland and the ride out to school and what it was like. She tells lots of nice stories about the wild flowers and the animals she saw and the people that she worked with and lived with and the different experiences she had teaching school. She talks about the requirements that the school had tot live up to and the requirements that the teachers had to fulfil to become teachers.
