REMARKS: This is an interview with Florence Norris and it takes place on January 22, 1979 at the home of Mrs. Norris on old Garden Valley Road. The interviewer is Star Eatherington. Also present is Valerie SSonnenberg ad Mrs. Norris' daughter Nelda Svarverud.
Florence was born in 1893 near Fairview which is on the Coos Bay Wagon Road west of Sitkum but east of Coquille. Her grandparents, the Benhams, had the post office there at Fairview. Just about the time that Florence was born, they gave i up. Florence's maiden name is Neely. Florence has a very good emory for names and she can remember her teachers' names, the names of the sawmills in the area and her neighbors. She talks about her horse "Julie" and how she would ride it bare back. She talks a litle bit about the differences between a sidesaddle and the man's saddle. She talks about the stagecoaches that came through the area. Her mother was a telegraph operator in Fairview and she would talk to her good friend Bella Laird in Sitkum by Morse code. She remembers the boat rides to the ocean although she didn't go too much, ad the fire works display that went off all at once down there. She remembers the colorful things and events in her life.
