REMARKS:Typescript of a speech entitled, "Friends in Gardiner", by Courtland Matthews. Apparently speaking before a literary society in the Gardiner area, Matthews discusses the influences on his poetry - including his father, Dr. James Newton Matthews. Matthews concludes by recommending that a later speaker before this unnamed organization be Mrs. Frances Holmstrom, "a former resident of Gardiner now living in Coquille". The typescript is signed by the author.; Also in this collection is a photocopy of an article from the Portland Oregonian newspaper, dated 15 Octobewr 1972, announcing winners in the annual Ben Hur Lampman Poetry Contest. Matthews' poem, "Rowanberries", won third place and is reprinted in this article.
