REMARKS:Papers of Hinsdale Estate Company [Gardiner area], relating to the Dean Creek [sometimes called Spruce Reach] Ranch and other holdings. The ranch is now the site of the Dean Creek Elk Preserve. This collection includes business correspondence between O.B. Hinsdale and Louis [last name unknown] concerning the ranch, and letters between Hinsdale and R.P. Bernhardt, who was a tenant on the ranch ca. 1910-1911. At this time, Hinsdale was living in Los Angeles, CA.; Two files contain extensive correspondence between O.B. Hinsdale and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, concerning the purchase of Indian allotments from Alice and Charley Johnson. The Johnsons were Umpqua Indians, and the sale of Indian land allotments had to be approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Files include affidavits from the Johnsons, as well as an Indian allotment land grant form.; One small file contains records of the Hinsdale Estate Company, a corporation operating ca. 1920-1929 and apparently responsible for distributing the proceeds of Hinsdale's estate.
