Remarks by Ms. Smeltzer:; Mason County was established under the Indian name of Sawamish on March 13, 1854. David Shelton a member of the first territorial legislature gave the county this name. The original conty seat was Oaakland on the Oakland Baty at the head of Hammersley Inlet. Later Mr. Shelton sponsored a bill to change the county name to Mason in honor of the first secretory of the territory, Charles H. Mason. This was done on January 3, 1864.
The county seat was changed to Shelton, a town named for the above David Shelton. Mr. Shelton was living in Washington County, Oregon Territory when the 1850 Oregon Territorial Census was taken. In 1853 he moved and homsteaded the above area.
