REMARKS:Papers concerning a race staged in 1955 between pony express riders and the Southern Pacific Railroad, to see which could deliver letters faster. The race was staged by the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce to call attention to the Southern Pacific Railway's slow passenger service. The Rogue River Special, nicknamed the "Night Crawler", was a passenger train operated South of Eugene, Oregon.; A relay team of riders competed with the train, to see which one could arrive first in Roseburg. The train won by 7 minutes.; This collection contains newspaper clippings from various Oregon and other United States newspapers describing the race, together with a folder of letters to and from Alan Knudtson, race organizer.
