REMARKS: This is a taped interview with Dr. James Finlay on July 26, 1979 in his office in Roseburg, Oregon. Taped for the Douglas County Museum Oral History Program. Interviewer: Judy Roberts.
Dr. Finlay is a dentist in Roseburg, his father was a dentist in Roseburg and Dr. Finlay has two of his sons who are also dentists and working with him at this time. His father came here in 1910. The Navy gave Dr. Finlay his training as a dentist prior to his going into the navy. He did have all of his prerequisites finished. When his faather first came to Roseburg he stayed with another man who was also a dentist in a large house here. He boarded with them for a while. It appears this other dentist was everything but honest and noble and honorable as he tried to swindle an insurance company and killed a man. It created quite a scandal in town and I guess this put Roseburg on the map at that time. Dr. Finlaly tells a lot about his dad's ealy practice and some of the equipment that was used. He doesn't relate too many experiences that his father had. His father is still living.
